20 Electrician Interview Questions & Answers


 

1.     Why should we hire you?

I have been keeping up with your company and was glad when an opportunity came up. I am a skilled electrician with five years of experience. I believe that my services will be better utilized here. I have also gone through the job description and it gives me the level of challenge that I love.

2.      What Are the Roles of an Electrician?

What have you been doing as an electrician? You can mention some of the roles from your former workplace or use the job description.

Sample Answer

Electricians detect and diagnose electrical issues, install and repair faulty electrical systems, conduct tests, use a number of testing devices to detect and diagnose problems and also supervise and offer training on how to repair and install different electrical components. (If there is a job description provided, please stick to it).

3.      What Are the Qualities That an Electrician Need to be Effective?

Every job has its inherent requirements and traits. Everything you mention should be role-related.

Sample Answer

An electrician needs to have good communication and problem-solving skills given the nature of the work involved. He/ she should have excellent people skills to be able to work in teams and get along well with other professionals. Other qualities include basic Math skills and a perfect understanding of the regulatory requirements surrounding electrical work.

4.      What Is the Main Challenge That You Encountered During Your Last Role? How Did You Manage It?

Every job presents its fair share of challenges that you need to solve. The interviewer is trying to tell whether you are a problem solver. Give an experience with a good ending.

Sample Answer

I worked for a good firm during my last role. They offered all the necessary equipment and the pay was amazing. However, I found it hard to commute every day. I was given a month’s contract and did not bother moving to a closer neighborhood. Th contract was then renewed followed by a permanent offering. I negotiated with the top management who allowed me stay at one of their houses at an affordable rate.

5.      Describe Your Daily Routine

What do you do on a daily basis? Pick one of your busiest days and describe it to the interviewer.

Sample Answer

My daily routine revolves around the same roles. I report to my workstation and look for electrical problems which I diagnose and fix. I then test the existing electrical systems and circuits using different devices, plan layouts and installations and closely monitor the electrical systems. I may also assemble, install and test electrical appliances using my array of tools.

6.      Briefly Describe Your Experience

Th interviewer just needs an overview of your time as an electrician. Do not be too wordy as most of these information is contained in your CV and resume.

Sample Answer

 This is my seventh year as an electrician. I have spent most of my career as a freelancer; working for schools, churches and IT companies. I have also been contracted to undertake electrical installations in a number of buildings. My work is perfect and my clients are normally happy.

7.      What Mindset and Strategy is Required for This Role?

The interviewer wants to ascertain if you know what it takes to be a good electrician. Ensure that the strategy and mindset relate to the role.

Sample Answer

I always ensure that I maintain high levels of accuracy and leave no stone unturned in my job- a strategy that has seen me thrive through the years. As for the right mindset, being result-oriented comes in handy in this job.

8.      What is The Main Challenge That You Foresee in This Job?

The interviewer expects you to have gone through the company’s culture, environment and policies as well as your job description. All those should help you realize some of the issues that may come up. Be honest. You can also spin this question around to your favor.

Sample Answer

A look into your company reveals that most of the things that brought challenges in my former workplaces have been fixed. I cannot therefore pinpoint an issue at the moment. However, I believe that I am qualified enough and can handle any issue that comes my way.

9.      How Do You Stay Motivated at Work?

What keeps you going despite the challenges? The interviewer wants to know where you draw your motivation from. Desist from mentioning material benefits.

Sample Answer

I am driven by challenges. I love solving challenging issues, which I encounter in this role. I also believe that my passion for electrical systems diagnostics gives me the needed to continue coming to work.

10. Mention One Strength That Makes You Qualified for This Role

The interviewer wants to know if you have any strength that may come in handy for the job. Ensure that you mention something relatable.

Sample Answer

I am a good team worker- a quality that every electrician needs. This job involves working with other departments such as IT, which cannot be possible if one cannot accommodate a team. I also have excellent communication skills and can relay information faster and clearly.

11. What Are Some of the Safety Measures That You Undertake in This Role?

The interviewer is testing your general knowledge and whether your safety training is up to date. Make sure that he/ she is convinced of your knowledge of necessary precautions.

Sample Answer

Whenever I am working, I make sure that all the circuits and machines are locked out and tagged. I also put on protective gears at all-time such as the right gloves and shoes when working on electrical lines.

12. What Is the Role of Fuses and Breakers? Are They Similar?

This is a technical question seeking your knowledge on some of the common equipment. Show the interviewer that you are competent enough and will fit in the organization.

Sample Answer

Both the fuse and the breaker disrupt the continuity of electricity thus protecting overloaded circuits. However, they are not similar. Whereas a fuse melts when overheated, the breaker has a switch that is automatically activated whenever there is an overload. (Make sure that your answer is clear and can even be understood by a layman)

13. What Are Your Areas of Specialization?

Just like in other professions, you can also choose to specialize as an electrician. This question seeks to reveal more information about your education and experience. Ensure that you show enthusiasm in whatever area you mention.

Sample Answer

I have worked on different projects and with various companies. However, I have developed a liking for residential projects. I have worked on more than 300 residential projects in the last two years. I also love being part of electrical installation and maintenance teams. However, with my skills and experience, I can work on any project related to this field.

14. How Would You Handle a Disagreement with a Colleague?

Your problem-solving and team working skills are being put to test by the interviewer. Remember, some projects require team working and thus call for high levels of tolerance. Show the interviewer that you can work well with a team.

Sample Answer

Conflicts are common, especially when working on projects involving several people. In case such a situation arises, I meet the colleague and listen to his/ her concerns. I will then ask the party to suggest some of the practical solutions before I also give my view. We will discuss and reach an agreement.

15. Your Resume Shows That You Have Done Several Electrical Projects Over the Years. Which Have Been Your Favorite and Why?

The interviewer wants to know where your passion as an electrician lies through the projects you enjoy doing most. This may come in handy when pairing you with a team. Be honest.

Sample Answer

I love residential projects, mostly because of my love for architecture and planning. I have managed to work on some buildings that I never thought I would set my feet on. I also love it when I make homeowners happy by solving electrical faults.

16. Where Do You See Yourself in Three Years?

Most companies love to retain their employees. The interviewer wants to know whether you are here for a short time or for the long term. Talk about what you would have done for the company or some milestones you wish to have achieved in your personal life.

Sample Answer

I do not plan to change careers any soon, and therefore, see myself being better at what I do in three years to come. I also hope I will have pursued an additional certification course.  

17. What Will Be the First Thing You Will Do If You Are Selected for This Role?

The interviewer is testing your work attitude. Convince him/ her that you will not sit pretty and wait to be pushed around.

Sample Answer

I understand that I need to take orders. However, being the proactive worker that I am, I will look for some of the things that need improvement. I will check for faulty lines, wiring issues and any equipment that may need my concern. I will also use that time to get to know my colleagues.

18. Why Did You Choose to Become an Electrician?

Th interviewer wants to know your main reason for joining this field and if it will affect your job. Ensure that you exude passion when answering him/ her.

Sample Answers

I have always enjoyed repairing things. I had problems with my parents when I was growing up since I’d open up a number of devices, look inside and try to rearrange stuff. I also made my own toys. This passion made me to settle on being an electrician, where I get to repair faulty machines and wiring systems. It is highly rewarding.

19. What Do You Think Makes an Electrician Qualified to Handle Large and Critical Projects?

The interviewer is ascertaining if you know what an electrician needs to be on top of the game. Convince him/ her that you have all it takes.

Sample Answer

For electricians to be experts, they have to spend years studying, training and working on different projects to gain the level of experience required. I completed school and an apprentice program before I was licensed. I also had to develop lots of skills such as team work and accuracy to reach where I am. (You can turn this around and make it about you. However, do not rub off as overconfident).

20. Do You Have a License? Do You Think It Is Important?

The interviewer wants to know if you obey regulatory requirements. Ensure that you have a license before applying for such a role.

Sample Answer

Yes. I have a license which I was given after completing my apprenticeship program. I believe that it is essential in this role as it shows that one has gone through the required training and meets all the required standards when it comes to electrical work. Without a license, I wouldn’t quality for employment.
